ITIL3 Frequently Asked Questions

Why ITIL version 3?

Best Practice inevitably means change to remain relevant and valuable to us.

With OGC in the driver’s seat, the ITSM community has provided expert input to the way IT Services are developed and delivered: IT Service Management adopts a Service Lifecycle approach, so existing ITIL2 processes are still there but within the new Service Lifecycle framework.

Is ITIL version 3 relevant to me?

The principles of the ITIL2 framework remain relevant, so your existing practices, if based on ITIL2, remain “good practice”. However the new Lifecycle approach and the additional processes and guidance can provide valuable improvements of your Service Management framework.

Where can I buy the books?

Visit the itSMF Australia website, www.itsmf.org.au. A range of formats are available (on-line, on CD or in paper-form) of the ITIL2, version 3 books and additional publications (pocket guides etc.).

Do I need to upgrade my ITIL2 certificate to ITIL version 3?

It depends, an ITIL certificate is an ITIL certificate and will remain valid as such. However, the introduction of the ITIL version 3 Lifecycle provides a much broader body of knowledge that may be relevant to your role or your organisation.  Lucid IT are leaders in the provision of ITIL V3 educational services and provide a range of  courses from ITIL v3 introductions or overview to certified Bridging courses for either Foundations or Masters (Service Managers).

Public courses are available through our training partners, ALC Training.

Version 2 training is still available (Essentials, Practitioners and Masters).

What ITIL version 3 training is available?

Lucid IT currently delivers the ITIL version 3 Essentials (Foundation certification), Foundation Bridging and Masters Bridging courses.

Public course schedules are available through ALC Training.

We are expecting ITIL version 3 Capability and Lifecycle. Intermediate courses to be released from Q4, 2008. The Capability courses are equivalent to the current ITIL2 Clustered Practitioners in as that they look at the practical capabilities required for operating a particular ‘area’ of the lifecycle (for instance ‘Operational Service & Analysis’). Lifecycle courses focus more on management of a particular Lifecycle phase (Service Operations or Design for instance).

How to become an ITIL version 3 ‘Service Managers’/Master?

ITIL version 3 will not offer a particular course to achieve its highest qualification. Instead people obtain this qualification by collecting credits through the Foundation certification, either the Capability or the Lifecycle courses and an overarching ‘Managing across the Lifecycle’ qualification. When enough certification points are achieved, the candidate will receive the ITIL version 3 Expert qualification.

Over and above this there will be an ITIL version 3 Masters qualification, but details on how to obtain this are yet unknown (but will most likely require practical experience and some kind of assessment).

I have my ITIL2 Service Managers, how do I upgrade my accreditation to V3?

By completing the Masters Bridging courses: existing ITIL2 Service Managers (Masters) can complete a single, 5-day course to obtain the ITIL version 3 Expert\Diploma qualification.

Courses are available through ALC Training.

I want to get the ITIL Version 3 Expert accreditation?

The quickest way of obtaining this qualification currently is to complete the ITIL2 Service Managers (Masters) and then complete the ITIL V3 Masters Bridging course. Lucid IT (in combination with our partner ALC Training) is offering a 50% discount on the Masters Bridging course for participants registering for the ITIL2 Service Managers course in the next 6 months.

Who accredits ITIL now?

APM Group will accredit ITIL3 certifications and training organisations - including Lucid IT: we are already an Accredited Training Organisation with APMG for PRINCE2.

Lucid IT will continue to use our existing examination organisations EXIN and ISEB, and as these organisations are licensed by APMG, Lucid IT’s accreditation as a training organisation will continue.
