Project Management
PRINCE2 and PMBOK
The reputation of IT as either a "business enabler" or "just a cost centre" will depend largely on its ability to effectively execute projects and, at a higher level, control the overall program of new capability development.
Success or failure depends on factors such as:
- Stakeholder management
- Requirements analysis and scope management
- Balancing the variables of cost, scope and schedule
- Risk management
- Implementation/release approach
- Addressing Service Management requirements
- Engagement between Application and Infrastructure teams
PRINCE2 and PMBOK give best practice guidance that satisfies a number of the above factors and both can be useful. PRINCE2 has a major focus on the process of Project Management (see below) whereas PMBOK is more about the guiding the function and roles of the Project Manager. Which you choose may depend on the problem you are solving at the time. In fact, a hybrid approach may give the optimal method for your organisation. Your organisational requirements will dictate the solution you should choose.
